Rancho Meladuco is a family-run date farm in California’s Coachella Valley, not far from Palm Springs. Our story began with four original Medjool date palms planted on the ranch decades ago — trees that produced fruit so good that the wows, oohs and aahs from friends and family convinced our founder, Joan Smith, to start farming dates in earnest. Today we hand-pick and hand-pack every box at our farm and ship our California-grown Medjool dates direct to homes, restaurants, and gift recipients across the country.
If you’ve never had a fresh, hand-packed Medjool date, you’re in for a surprise. This guide covers what California Medjool dates actually are, what makes ours different, how to choose between our boxes, how to store them, and how to give them as gifts. Everything you’d want to know before buying — from a date farm that doesn’t take its dates for granted.

We’re proud to be one of the country’s preeminent direct-to-consumer date growers — and to have earned shelf space at Whole Foods, Erewhon, Williams-Sonoma, and Walmart.
What Are California Medjool Dates?
Medjool dates are a large, soft variety of date originally cultivated in Morocco and brought to California’s Coachella Valley in the early 20th century. They’re prized for three things: their size (a jumbo Medjool can be the size of a small plum), their texture (tender, almost candy-like flesh), and their flavor (rich, caramel-sweet, with notes of toffee). They’re often called “nature’s candy” — a fitting nickname for a fruit that tastes like dessert in a single bite.
The Coachella Valley produces almost all of the Medjool dates grown in the United States. Hot days, cool nights, low humidity, and access to clean irrigation create growing conditions nearly identical to the date palm’s native Middle East — with the food-safety standards and traceability of a California farm.
Our Story
Rancho Meladuco started with four date palms planted on our ranch in the Coachella Valley decades ago. When the trees began producing, we shared their fruit with friends and family — and got back the kind of reactions you don’t get from supermarket dates. Our founder Joan Smith — a CPA, mother of three, home cook, and backyard gardener — decided to expand the operation and start farming dates so more people could try them. We’ve grown a lot since then, but we still use traditional farming and harvesting methods, and we still pack every box by hand. You can also visit us at the Date Shop in Newport Beach, California.
Organic vs. Conventional Medjool Dates
We offer both. Our 2 lb Organic Medjool Dates Box is certified organic — grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Our 2 lb Conventional Medjool Dates Box is the same hand-packed quality at a lower price point. Both are jumbo-grade, whole, un-pitted, California-grown.
If you’re buying a gift or want the absolute premium, choose the organic. If you cook with dates regularly — chopping into salads, blending into smoothies, baking — the conventional box gives you the same flavor and texture without the organic premium.

How to Store Medjool Dates
- Room temperature: Sealed in their box, Medjools keep beautifully on the counter for about a month.
- Refrigerator: Sealed in the fridge, they last up to six months. They firm up slightly — bring to room temperature before serving for the softest texture.
- Freezer: Medjools freeze well for up to a year. Thaw at room temp. No real change in flavor or texture.
- The white sheen: Sometimes a thin white film appears on the date surface. That’s natural sugar that crystalizes as the date releases moisture. Not mold — a sign of a good, sweet date.
- And of course: Don’t forget to spit the pit. (Rocky, our farm dog mascot, would like to remind you.)
How to Eat Medjool Dates
The simplest way: split one open, pull out the pit, eat. A great Medjool needs nothing else. But they also shine in a wide range of recipes — sweet and savory. A few favorites:
- Burrata with Prosciutto & Sizzled Dates
- Roast Chicken with Lemon, Dates, Garlic & Rosemary
- Espresso Sticky Toffee Pudding
- Date Key Lime Pie Balls
- Pimiento Cheese Stuffed Dates

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Medjool dates healthy?
Medjool dates are a whole, nutrient-dense fruit. They’re a natural source of fiber, potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants. They’re naturally sweet (the source of “nature’s candy”) but the fiber slows sugar absorption — a better-for-you sweetener than most refined alternatives.
Are Rancho Meladuco Medjool dates raw?
Yes. Our Medjools are unprocessed and minimally handled. No pasteurization, no fumigation, no preservatives. What you get is the date as it ripened on the palm, hand-picked and hand-packed.
Are Medjool dates supposed to be sticky?
Yes. A good Medjool is moist and tender — slightly sticky is desirable. A non-sticky date is usually a dehydrated one. Our hand-packing keeps them at peak moisture all the way to your door.
Do you ship year-round?
Yes. We hold inventory from each fall harvest in temperature-controlled storage so we can ship throughout the year. New harvest pre-orders open each fall.
